Tailor James was born as Earlene Samuels on July 21, 1980, in the Canadian town of Mississauga, Ontario, just outside of Toronto. She began modeling at the age of 17, after she was discovered by a photographer while out dining at a local restaurant. Much of her early work as a print model included shoots for advertising campaigns, calendars and catalogs. She was also featured in TV commercials as well as on the E! channel's Wild On! and Star! Daily programs.

Her nude layouts for the publication were shot in some of the world's most exotic locations by the renowned Mark Daughn.In 2001, she sent her photos to Playboy, and the magazine enthusiastically invited her to take test shots at their Chicago offices. Tailor James made her Playboy debut as their Cyber Girl of the Week in September 2001, and after pulling in the most fan votes, she was named Cyber Girl of the Month for January 2002. April 2002 marked her debut on the cover of Playboy’s international editions in Croatia, Russia and Japan.

Tailor James' appearance as Playboy's Miss June 2003 established her as a top international glamour model and ensured her many more multi-page pictorials in the publication's special edition issues, including Playboy's Girls With Girls Playmates in Bed.
